Angela Yvonne Davis, born on January 26, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama, became a master scholar who studied at the Sorbonne. She joined the U.S. Communist Party and was jailed for charges related to a prison outbreak, though ultimately cleared. Known for books like Women, Race & Class, she has worked as a professor and activist who advocates gender equity, prison reform and alliances across color line. She is often associated with the Black Panthers and with the black power politics of the late 1960s and early 1970s. She joined the Communist Party when Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968. She was active with the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) before the Black Panthers. Angela Davis also ran for U.S. Vice President on the Communist Party Ticket in 1980. She is internationally known in her ongoing work to combat all forms of oppression in the U.S. and abroad.
